Why I Became a Physio: Dr Lucy Douglas

Hello everyone! As some of you may know, my name is Lucy. I’ve been working at Surf Life Physio for 2 years now and have loved applying my knowledge into a sports specific private practice. And this is my first ever blog!

To start, I wanted to let you all in to why I became a physiotherapist. I moved up from Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula to QLD in 2019 to study at Bond University. My whole life consisted of sport and exercise, bringing in a lot of overuse / overload injuries, but all manageable with rehab and physio. Whenever I went into a physio clinic I was fascinated by their knowledge and loved to learn more about my body, as I believe what they teach can be used through the rest of my life. He taught me how to self-rehab and self-manage myself, which is something I strongly try to pass on to my clients in the clinic.

I was the most injury prone person of my family – being so sporty you’d think they’d mainly come from this. But, I’m also just a bit airy fairy sometimes. My first major injury was a hamstring tear… from tripping over my dog. My first broken bone was the day before I was meant to start at Surf life… from my mate standing on my wrist in a wrestle.

This year I have gotten a flake fracture in my ankle and tore my lateral ligaments in my left foot… from dancing to a questionable band at Lennox pub, then doing it again to my right foot from showing off my inner country dancing at Straddy pub. Aside from these silly mechanisms, surfing consumes my life in the best way possible and a lot of tension/pain has come from this stoke, which I will be addressing in the next few blog posts.

 It’s safe to say, I need physio! So why not become one? I love helping people through what I was once helped through (and still am thanks to Josh). I’m a firm believer in education and exercise, so expect some homework after our appointments! I can’t wait to meet more of you.
